Horses Before The Race

Don’t do that
Men’s meeting with Pastor
Preaching yet again
Over sausage and scrambled
Small talk ’round table
On a tight clock.
Give me testimony
Men with dirt in their fingernails
Hearts that vacillate like mine
Words from the Good Book
That have rescued from the pit
Thrilling tales
Of coming through knotholes.
Gentle patience for
My tears, rage or bafflement.
Respect; secrets kept.
This is spiritual food
Comfort and courage
Camaraderie
That builds and sets again
On the track
Ready for the Race.
