Brebeuf: Giving That Christ Might Come

An excerpt read by E. J. Pratt from his moving narrative poem Brebeuf and His Brethren:

I read the entire poem yesterday afternoon. Over 2100 lines. It went quickly taking the breath away, as there came scenes of Jesuit training, the struggle with language and culture, the mystic haunts of the wilderness, the reluctant concessions of the Hurons, the tempering of the body, will and dedication by hard trek and portage, capture and torture; the ultimate Calvary at the Iroquois stake for the sake of trusting and brave aboriginal charges.
