Ridiculous Gift

What’s to be gotten

He has everything

The Benz and the cottage

The gaudy gold ring

The friends at the office

The games at the club

So what would be novelty

Aye there’s the rub.

He works killing hours

The kids miss their Dad

But he must deliver

Things he never had.

The eyes show a redness

The shoulders a hunch

And wife is a stranger

But for the odd lunch.

It’s peace that he needs

And time for the soul

For all the big questions

On how to be whole.

A Baby the answer

This clear Natal Night

And babies bring promise

And hope for the right.

And Christ comes in silence

And Christ comes to heal

Both shepherds and wise men

And our commonweal.
