Today is Sunny

Today is sunny

After dusty white-outs

On yesterday’s drive

From London

And Mother in hospital

Tubes, flashers and syrup-flow

Making awkward

Our familial chorus.

But there we were

And there she smiled

All ninety years of her.

Memory images offered up

Like summers’ shuttlecocks

Of long ago

And younger players.

Players who now

Wince and grind

For another round

As does Mom

In heroic and happy reflex

Their forbear and friend.

And yes

The sun will be back.
